Credit: Mark SeligerThe Rolling Stones‘ Keith Richards will be featured reminiscing about growing up in post-World War II England in a new U.K. television documentary that will premiere in July. The 60-minute program, titled Keith Richards — The Origin of the Species, was directed by award-winning filmmaker Julien Temple and is part of the BBC Two channel’s My Generation season, celebrating the history of U.K. pop music.
The documentary will focus on Richards’ life before The Rolling Stones, and will tie in his recollections with a look at how the conditions in the postwar U.K. led to the cultural changes exemplified by the 1960s music scene that included The Stones and The Beatles.
“There was a feeling late ’50s/early ’60s that there was a change coming,” says Richards in the film. “I certainly felt that for my generation, what was happening and the feeling in the air was — it’s time to push limits. The world is ours now and you can rise or fall on it.”
In a video preview of the flick, Richards recalls his childhood interest in airplanes, revealing that he used to enjoy putting together model airplanes and joking that he “liked the glue.”
Temple says of Keith Richards — The Origin of the Species, “This film sets out to explore how both [Richards] and the ’60s in England came about.”
Meanwhile, Richards is set to host a special TV programming block in September that will air on the BBC Four channel. Keith Richards’ Lost Weekend will feature various films, programs and/or concert movies chosen by the guitar legend. Each show will include an introduction by Keith, in which he discusses why he picked the program.
