Bob Weir: The Dead Isn’t Dead

ABC/Randy HolmesBob Weir has a lot on his plate this year, including the Dead and Company project. That band also includes former Grateful Dead drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, as well as singer-guitarist John Mayer who is a star in his own right. But according to Weir that’s the tip of the iceberg. He tells The Guardian, “I’m also doing a TV show, I’m writing a book and I’ve got a solo record coming out… I’ve got as much on my plate as I’ve ever had. No — more.”

While the Grateful Dead allegedly played their last show ever last July 5 in Chicago, Weir is open-ended about the band’s future. “Whatever I’m  doing, a lot of it will be furthering this heritage [and] legacy,” he says. “I’m not the guy who was saying it was the last show; I’m good to play.”

As for Dead bassist Phil Lesh, who was diagnosed with bladder cancer last fall and has other musical interests anyway, Weir says, “I just saw him, played with him last weekend and he seemed fine… I view death as the last and best reward for a life well lived, so Phil can look forward to dying. But I don’t think he’s there yet.”
