Credit: Anna WebberBillboard.com is hosting the premiere of “Judy,” a new track from Stephen Stills and Judy Collins‘ upcoming collaborative album, Everybody Knows, due out September 22.
Stills wrote “Judy” as a tribute to Collins while he was working on her 1968 album, Who Knows Where the Time Goes?, and he made a solo demo of the tune around that time that was released on his 2007 archival compilation, Just Roll Tape.
Everybody Knows celebrates the 50th anniversary of the start of the singers’ long friendship and their brief love affair, which also inspired Stephen to write his classic Crosby, Stills & Nash song “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.”
Asked how she feels about Stills having written songs about their relationship, Collins tells Billboard, “Oh, it’s just delicious. We always were friends. We didn’t ever hate each other. We had a kind of, I would say, dramatic love affair, lots of positive and then a lot of upset because it wasn’t working out. And then, of course ‘Suite: Judy Blue Eyes’ came along and, I mean, how can you resist when you hear that song all over the country?!”
The album features new versions of songs tied into the singers’ shared history, such as “Judy,” along with some cover tunes chosen by Stills and Collins, and one brand-new tune by Judy.
“It’s got the markings of something that was bound to happen,” says Collins of the album, “and by some miracle both of us are still on the planet and feeling very healthy and positive.”
The duo launched a lengthy U.S. tour in support of Everybody Knows last month that winds down November 5 in Santa Rosa, California. Collins tells Billboard that if her and Stills’ schedules allow, she’d like to extend the trek.
