Stone Temple Pilots Discuss New Singer Search: “It’s Impossible to Replace Scott”

Scott Legato/Getty ImagesStone Temple Pilots are currently “neck-deep” into the process of auditioning new singers. The surviving members of the band — guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz — are looking for a lot of things in a new vocalist, but they realize they can’t “replace” their original frontman, the late Scott Weiland.

“It’s impossible to replace Scott. It really is. We created something that only the four of us could create,” Robert tells Rolling Stone. “It’s about moving forward, but it’s also about someone honoring that and being able to get their creativity around that.”

Still, the trio feels that they, as Dean puts it, “got a lot left in the tank musically speaking.”

“Eric, Dean and I have something — we’ve been playing music half our lives and you can’t just dismiss that,” adds Robert. “It’s something that I appreciate and I cherish in my life and I want to continue doing that.”

As for what they are looking for in a new lead vocalist, the DeLeo brothers and Kretz are keeping an open mind.

“We’re looking for somebody that fills a lot of criteria,” Dean says. “Man, woman. There’s a couple of people we really dig and we have some more coming in.”
