Larry Hulst/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty ImagesGrammy-winning bass player Rob Wasserman, who co-led the band RatDog with Grateful Dead founder Bob Weir, and recorded with rock greats Van Morrison, Lou Reed and Elvis Costello, among others, has died. He’s believed to have been 63 or 64.
Bob Weir announced the news on Facebook Wednesday. Just hours after posting that Wasserman had been hospitalized, Weir wrote, “I’m devastated to pass along that Rob Wasserman lost his struggle today, and we have lost a beautiful friend and artist.”
Weir continued, “I can still hear the sound of his bow playing those strings unamplified and pure. It’s one of the most glorious sounds I’ve ever heard, and the music and warmth he gave us will live on in the hearts of everyone he touched.”
Weir also announced the news on his Twitter, declaring, “One of the world’s most beautiful friends and artists has left us. May Rob’s warmth and music live in your hearts as it always has in mine.”
There was no further information about Wasserman’s cause of death.
Wasserman won a Grammy for his track “Brothers,” recorded with jazz singer Bobby McFerrin for Wasserman’s 1988 Duets album.
