New Orleans music doc featuring Keith Richards, Robert Plant, Sting getting virtual cinematic release in May

Keith Richards, Robert Plant and Sting are among the artists featured in Up from the Streets: New Orleans — The City of Music, a new documentary exploring the Big Easy’s musical heritage that will get a virtual cinematic release on May 15.

Viewers will be able to buy tickets to the movie, which they will be able to watch at home, for $12 from one of more than 50 participating U.S. theaters via Eventive.org. Once a ticket has been purchased, the order will be good for one week, and viewers will have 72 hours to finish the film once they’ve started watching it.

Part of the proceeds from each ticket sold will go toward be donated to The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s Jazz & Heritage Music Relief Fund, an initiative launched to help Louisiana musicians who need financial assistance because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Up from the Streets, which got its premiere last October at the 30th annual New Orleans Film Festival, looks at the history and evolution music of New Orleans, a cultural melting pot that’s considered the birthplace of jazz and a bastion of R&B and funk.

The documentary features commentary from Richards, Plant, Sting and Bonnie Raitt, as well as interviews with such notable New Orleans musicians as Harry Connick Jr., Wynton Marsalis and Branford Marsalis. In addition, the film includes new and archival performance footage of such legendary musicians and groups as Louis Armstrong, Fats Domino, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, The Neville Brothers and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
