New Limited-Edition Jimi Hendrix Vinyl EP Being Released as Part of Record Store Day’s 2016 Black Friday Sale

1077

Experience Hendrix LLC/Legacy RecordingsA collection of rare 1969 Jimi Hendrix studio recordings titled Morning Symphony Ideas will be issued as a limited-edition vinyl EP in conjunction with the 2016 edition of Record Store Day’s “Back to Black Friday” event, which is scheduled for November 25. The “official bootleg” release, which is pressed on a 10-inch, translucent-yellow vinyl disc, includes three tracks that Hendrix recorded at New York City’s Record Plant studio between September and December of ’69 with bassist Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles.

Morning Symphony Ideas features a trio of in-progress recordings — “Jungle,” “Room Full of Mirrors” and “Strato Strut” — that find Hendrix exploring such funk and R&B influences as James Brown and Curtis Mayfield during a period when he was beginning to put together his Band of Gypsys backing group.

“Jungle” features Hendrix accompanied by Miles and includes segments of the songs “Ezy Rider” and “Villanova Junction,” the latter of which Jimi premiered live at the Woodstock festival.

“Room Full of Mirrors” also features Hendrix and Miles, and is an updated rendition of a tune Jimi began working on during the sessions for 1968’s Electric Ladyland album. This version also includes a bit of the song “Message to Love,” which appeared on the 1970 live album Band of Gypsys.

“Strato Strut” features Hendrix backed by both Miles and Cox, and finds Jimi paying stylistic tribute to Brown’s lead guitar player, Jimmy Nolen.

The Morning Symphony Ideas EP will be sold exclusively at participating independent record stores. A full six-track version of Morning Symphony Ideas was released on CD and digitally in 2000, and is still available for purchase at Hendrix’s official online store.
