You also can listen to “For Real” now at Petty’s official YouTube channel. The poignant autobiographical tune features Petty musing about his passion for music.
“I did it for real, would’ve done it for free,” Tom sings in the song’s chorus. “I did it for me, ’cause it was all that rang true…and I did it for you.”
The Best of Everything is a career-spanning collection of songs that includes the late Petty’s work with The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch and as a solo artist. The 38-track album is available for pre-order as a two-CD set, a four-LP package on either black or clear vinyl, and a digital download.
Among the many well-known songs appearing on the retrospective are “Free Fallin’,” “I Won’t Back Down,” “Don’t Do Me Like That,” “Listen to Her Heart,” “Breakdown,” “The Waiting,” “Don’t Come Around Here No More,” “Refugee,” “American Girl,” “Here Comes My Girl,” “I Need to Know,” “Even the Losers,” and Tom’s unforgettable duet with Stevie Nicks, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.”
The album also includes two unreleased tracks — the aforementioned “For Real” and an alternate version of the 1985 Petty and the Heartbreakers tune “The Best of Everything.” The latter recording was made available as a digital single last year when the compilation was first announced.
Petty’s family and band mates helped curate The Best of Everything, fulfilling Tom’s wish to release an album gathering together his strongest material from throughout his career.
