Legacy RecordingsThe lead track of Paul Simon‘s forthcoming studio album In the Blue Light, a reworked version of his 1973 tune “One Man’s Ceiling Is Another Man’s Floor,” was released as a digital single and via streaming services on Wednesday.
Simon’s new rendition of the song is more atmospheric than the original, with some added jazz-flavored elements. Paul’s wife, Edie Brickell, contributes finger snaps to the tune. You can check out the track now at Simon’s official VEVO YouTube channel.
In the Blue Light, which will be released on September 7, features new versions of 10 of the folk-rock legend’s favorite lesser-known tunes from his back catalog, incorporating jazz and classical influences.
“It’s an unusual occurrence for an artist to have the opportunity to revisit earlier works and re-think them; to modify, even completely change parts of the originals,” the 76-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Famer explains in the album’s liner notes. “Happily, this opportunity also gave me the gift of playing with an extraordinary group of musicians, most of whom I hadn’t recorded with before.”
Among the many guest musicians featured on In the Blue Light album are such respected jazz artists as Wynton Marsalis, Jack DeJohnette, Bill Frisell and John Patitucci, as well as the New York City-based chamber-music ensemble yMusic. In addition, Simon’s longtime guitarist Vincent Nguini, who died last year, lent his talents to an update of Paul’s 2000 tune “Darling Lorraine.”
In the Blue Light will hit stores as Simon is winding down his Homeward Bound — The Farewell Tour. The trek culminates with a New York City concert on September 22 in the borough of Queens’ Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
