Following David Bowie‘s death in 2016, Dave Grohl revealed that he’d tried to collaborate with the late music icon a few years before he passed. The Foo Fighters frontman had written a song for a movie and asked Bowie to sing on it, but the British rock legend declined, saying he didn’t like the movie.
In an interview with British GQ, Grohl said the song could still see the light of day, but it won’t be coming from him.
“I gave it to another band who hasn’t used it yet,” Grohl said. When the interviewer asked whether he’d like to reveal the identity of the band, Grohl replied, “No, I don’t want to spoil the surprise.”
So to sum up, there’s a song floating around written by Dave Grohl for David Bowie that’s currently in the hands of a mystery band. Basically, it’s the biggest Foo Fighters-related mystery since Grohl revealed the band’s new album, Concrete and Gold, would feature the “biggest pop star in the world.”
Also during the interview, Grohl revealed who his favorite lead-guitar player is…none other than Led Zeppelin‘s Jimmy Page.
“I loved the way that he was always teetering on the edge of total chaos, but seemed to place every note in a space that really drew emotion,” Dave maintained. “So when you watch a movie like [the 1976 concert film The] Song Remains the Same, or any live footage from…’71, ’73, ’75, even the earlier stuff, he’s just going for it. And it’s that sort of fearlessness that I respect most in musicians — not perfection or any sort of clean technical proficiency.”
