The band dedicated the Joshua Tree track “Running to Stand Still,” which is about drug addiction, to the late Soundgarden frontman, according to Variety. “For the lion that was Chris Cornell, we send a prayer to his lioness,” said Bono.
In addition, before U2 took the stage, Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” was heard over the P.A. system, and the audience sang along and held their smartphones aloft, according to Variety.
In an apparent comment on the fact that so many rock heroes have left us too early, Bono also said, “Here we still are. Here you still are. What a blessing…let’s do this again in 2047.”
As Variety notes, U2 is the only band of its stature whose lineup remains intact after more than 35 years.
