Patrick Balls; Mary McCartney/MPL CommunicationsLooks like Paul McCartney wasn’t too thrilled with what Phil Collins had to say about him in a recent interview.
As previously reported, in the interview with London’s The Sunday Times, Collins revealed that he’s held a grudge against McCartney since a 2002 incident in which he felt the ex-Beatles star acted condescendingly toward him. Now, the former Genesis singer/drummer reports that McCartney has contacted him via email about his comments regarding the alleged slight.
Collins tells Billboard that McCartney “was upset” about what he said, adding, “I certainly didn’t get any flowers from him; I got more of a ‘Let’s just get on with our lives.'”
In the Sunday Times interview, Phil claimed that when he asked Paul to sign a copy of a Beatles book at a major event, the rock legend turned to his then-wife Heather Mills and said, “Oh Heather, our little Phil’s a bit of a Beatles fan.” Collins told the newspaper that when McCartney said that, he thought, ‘You f***, you f***,'” adding, “Never forgot it.”
Phil also told the paper that Paul “has this thing when he’s talking to you, where he makes you feel…’I know this must be hard for you, because I’m a Beatle. I’m Paul McCartney and it must be very hard for you to actually be holding a conversation with me.'”
Now, regarding McCartney’s reaction, Collins tells Billboard, “I’m sorry he’s upset that I kinda said something nasty about him — well, it wasn’t really nasty. If people don’t tell people that sometimes their attitude could be a bit better, then you’re not gonna get any better, y’know?”
He adds, “I think maybe I should just brush it under the carpet and forget about it and move on, but it did happen.”
