Credit: Pep BonetMeet Lemmysuchus obtusidens, a newly identified prehistoric crocodile named after Motorhead frontman Lemmy.
According to London’s Natural History Museum, the creature lived around 164 million years ago during the Middle Jurassic Period. It also had a “broad snout” and “large blunt teeth” used for “crushing shelled prey such as turtles.” Scientists say that the crocodile would’ve been “one of the biggest coastal predators of its time.”
“Although Lemmy passed away at the end of 2015, we’d like to think that he would have raised a glass to Lemmysuchus, one of the nastiest sea creatures to have ever inhabited the Earth,” says Natural History Museum curator Lorna Steel, who suggested that the crocodile be named after the “Ace of Spades” rocker.
Lemmy died in December 2015 from a combination of prostate cancer, cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure. He was 70.
