A new Metallica album may be in the works…if the quarantine lasts long enough.
Drummer Lars Ulrich revealed the news Tuesday during a livestreamed chat with Marc Benioff, CEO of the San Francisco-based tech company Salesforce. During the conversation, Ulrich shared that he and the other three Metallica members participate in weekly Zoom meetings, during which they discuss “how we can just be a band again.”
“At its core essence [being in a band] is just four guys in room, or connected via Zoom, making music together,” Ulrich says. “And I can tell you that all four of us are really excited about what that could look like.”
As for whether a new album could come from that, Ulrich says he “can’t tell you” for sure, since we don’t know yet exactly how long the quarantine will last. “But if you and I and the rest of the world are still sitting here six months from now or a year from now, I’d say there’s a very good chance,” he says.
Metallica’s most recent album is 2016’s Hardwired…to Self-Destruct.
