Deep Purple releasing career-spanning compilation “A Fire in the Sky” in September

1196

RhinoDeep Purple, one of the most influential hard-rock bands ever to emerge from the U.K., will release a new career-spanning compilation called A Fire in the Sky on September 8. The album, which will feature highlights from the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s various lineups, will be available as a three-CD set and a single-disc collection.

The three-CD version of A Fire in the Sky features 40 tracks, including at least one song from each of the band’s studio albums from its 1968 debut, Shades of Deep Purple, to its 2013 release, Now What?!

Among the many memorable tunes features on the compilation are the group’s 1968 hit cover of Joe South’s “Hush” — sung by original frontman Rod Evans — and the band’s signature rock anthem “Smoke on the Water,” from Deep Purple’s classic Ian Gillan-led “Mark II” lineup.

Other memorable tunes from the band’s “Mark II” incarnation appearing on the three-CD edition of A Fire in the Sky include “Highway Star,” “Woman from Tokyo,” “Space Truckin'” and “Child in Time.” Meanwhile, the David Coverdale-fronted ‘mid-70s Deep Purple is represented by such songs as “Burn,” “Mistreated” and “Soldier of Fortune.”

The single-CD version of A Fire in the Sky contains 20 tracks, and focuses on the various singles Deep Purple has released over the years.

A 27-track, three-LP vinyl version of the compilation will be issued on November 3.

The current Deep Purple lineup will head out on a North American summer tour with Alice Cooper that kicks off August 12 in Las Vegas. The band will be supporting its recently released studio album InFinite on the trek.
