David Gilmour live in Pompeii (Francesco Prandoni/Redferns)David Gilmour on Thursday played the first of two special shows in Pompeii, Italy, marking the first time the ex-Pink Floyd guitarist performed at the historic Roman site since his former band filmed its famous 1972 concert movie Live at Pompeii there.
As Rolling Stone reports, the concert was the first rock show ever played in front of an audience at Pompeii’s ancient amphitheater, which was built about 80 B.C. Pink Floyd’s performances featured in the 1972 movie were filmed without an audience.
At his Pompeii show, which was recorded for a future concert film, Gilmour included a couple of rarely played early-’70s Pink Floyd songs in his set in honor of the occasion: “One of These Days,” a 1971 tune that appeared in Live in Pompeii; and the Dark Side of the Moon tune “The Great Gig in the Sky,” which he hadn’t performed live since 2006.
After performing the latter song, Gilmour addressed the crowd, saying, “Grazie mille (Thank you so much)…It’s lovely to be back here in this beautiful place after all these years, amongst all you people and all these ghosts, ancient and recent.”
The rest of the show featured songs Gilmour has been performing regularly during his current tour, including plenty of tunes from his latest solo album, 2015’s Rattle That Lock, and a few cuts from his 2006 release, On an Island. Filling out the set were various Pink Floyd classics and deep cuts, including “Wish You Were Here,” “Money,” “High Hopes,” “Fat Old Sun,” “Run Like Hell,” and “Comfortably Numb.”

Gilmour plays his second and final Pompeii show tonight. His current European tour is mapped out through a five-night late-September stand at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
