BMGDavid Crosby‘s latest solo album, Sky Trails, sails into stores today, less than a year after his previous record, Lighthouse, was released. Crosby tells ABC Radio that the new album is a more diverse-sounding collection of tunes than Lighthouse, which was a stripped-down acoustic-driven effort.
“[A]ll the songs [on Sky Trails] are completely different and they go in all kinds of directions,” the folk-rock legend explains. “So it’s hard to make a group categorization of the record…and say it’s kind of like reflective or it’s very aggressive. It’s all of those things in different songs.”
Crosby’s main collaborator on Sky Trails was his son James Raymond, who co-wrote four of the album’s 10 tracks and produced the record.
Crosby says it’s “an enormous gift” working with Raymond, who also was a key contributor to David’s 2014 album Croz, and has played with his dad in CPR and Crosby, Stills & Nash.
“He’s a tremendously talented guy. He’s an amazing musician, if anything better than me, and a wonderful cat, and a very, very good producer,” gushes Crosby. “We write extremely well together. I mean, some of the best writing I’ve ever done has been with my son James.”
Other musicians who contributed to Sky Trails include bassist Mai Agan, drummer Steve DiStanislao and saxophonist Steve Tavaglione. The album features a cover of the 1976 Joni Mitchell tune “Amelia,” and songs Crosby co-wrote with Michael McDonald and one of David’s Lighthouse collaborators, Becca Stevens.
Crosby will support Sky Trails with a U.S. fall tour kicking off October 30 in Chicago and running through a December 9 concert in Clearwater, Florida. David’s backing band for the trek will include Raymond, CPR guitarist Jeff Pevar, DiStanislao, Agan and another Lighthouse contributor — singer/keyboardist Michelle Willis.
