ABC/Randy HolmesChris Cornell‘s widow Vicky has shared a statement reflecting on the one-year anniversary of her late husband’s funeral. The Soundgarden frontman died by suicide on May 18, 2017, and was buried during a private service at Hollywood Forever Cemetery a week later on May 26.
“While May 18 will forever mark the worst day of my life, the 26th…marks the second,” Vicky writes. “The day I was forced to lay the love of my life to rest. I wasn’t ready…I’m still not ready. I didn’t and don’t want to bury my husband.”
Vicky returned to Hollywood Forever this past May 18 to hold a public vigil in Chris’ memory on the one-year anniversary of his death.
“Being back at Hollywood Forever last Friday night was stepping into a place that serves as a reminder of what I’ve lost, a missing piece that hurts so much,” Vicky writes. “But seeing you all and feeling so much love renewed my feelings of hope and gave me the strength to keep going, to continue to honor him and not lose sight of all I have to be grateful for.”
“I will speak his name every day,” she continues. “I will continue to keep the promise for him and Chris will live forever in the present.”
Chris’ funeral last year was attended by his Soundgarden and Audioslave band mates, as well as Dave Grohl, Metallica‘s James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, and Led Zeppelin‘s Jimmy Page.
During the service, Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington performed Leonard Cohen‘s “Hallelujah.” Two months later, on what would’ve been Chris’ 53rd birthday, Bennington took his own life.
