Andrew Lipovsky/NBCSoundgarden frontman Chris Cornell soared over the lush backing of live strings during a moody performance of his new solo single, “The Promise,” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Wednesday night.

Cornell recorded “The Promise” for an upcoming film about the Armenian genocide. The movie, also called The Promise, stars Oscar Isaac and Christian Bale, and opens in theaters April 21.

Proceeds from sales of “The Promise” song will be donated to humanitarian aid and relief organization International Rescue Committee.
