Heather Porcaro; ABC/Randy HolmesToto keyboardist Steve Porcaro made a surprise appearance with Weezer on Tuesday night when the alternative-rock act performed its cover of Toto’s “Africa” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The performance likely never would have happened had it not been for a fun social media campaign that began several months ago, when a Weezer fan tweeted at the band and frontman Rivers Cuomo from the account @WeezerAfrica, pleading with them to cover the hit track.

Weezer initially acknowledged the campaign by jokingly releasing a cover of another Toto single, “Rosanna.” However, a week later Weezer finally blessed fans with a cover of “Africa,” which was released as digital single.

Now the song is proving to be a hit for Weezer, cracking the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week.

On Kimmel, the late-night host introduced Weezer’s performance of “Africa” on the show’s outdoor stage. About three-quarters of the way into the performance, the band brought out Porcaro, who played a brief solo before exiting the stage.

As previously reported, Toto will launch a North American leg of its 40 Trips Around the Sun 40th anniversary tour on July 30 in Vancouver, Canada, and the band just also added a fall U.S. leg that runs from late October to late November.
