RhinoA new concert film featuring highlights from a two-night Joni Mitchell 75th birthday tribute event held in Los Angeles this past November will be released as a DVD on March 29.
The Music Center Presents Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration will boast 21 performances culled from the star-studded shows, which included appearances by Graham Nash, James Taylor, Kris Kristofferson, Los Lobos, Chaka Khan, Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones, Seal, Diana Krall, Rufus Wainwright and more.
Two frequent Mitchell collaborators, Brian Blade and Jon Cowherd, served as co-musical directors for the concerts, which took place on November 6 and 7 at The Music Center at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
All of the performers offered up renditions of various songs Mitchell composed throughout her long career, with the exception of Nash. He sang his 1970 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young classic “Our House,” a tune inspired by his romance with Joni.
“We were so fortunate to be able to produce two concerts that honored one of the world’s most inspirational and dynamic artists, Joni Mitchell,” says The Music Center’s president and CEO, Rachel Moore. “[T]hey were once-in-a-lifetime experiences for all those able to attend and celebrate her.”
The Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration film was previously screened in a variety of theaters in February. The Joni 75 soundtrack CD, featuring 15 performances, is scheduled to be released this Friday, March 8.
