Credit: Jimmy KingAn archival David Bowie box set titled Who Can I Be Now? (1974–1976), a follow-up to 2015’s Five Years (1969-1973) compilation, will be released on September 23. The expansive collection will include remastered versions of four Bowie albums — Diamond Dogs, David Live, Young Americans and Station to Station — as well as a previously unreleased 1974 studio effort called The Gouster recorded just before Young Americans.
In addition, Who Can I Be Now? contains previously unreleased alternate mixes of David Live and Station to Station; Live Nassau Coliseum ’76, a concert album previously available only on the 2010 deluxe reissue of Station to Station; and Re:Call 2, a 13-track compilation featuring non-album singles, single versions and B-sides from the 1974-1976 period.
The Gouster was produced by Tony Visconti, and was recorded and mixed in Philadelphia before Bowie headed to New York City to work with John Lennon and producer Harry Maslin on what became 1975’s Young Americans. The album includes previously unreleased alternate mixes of three songs that ended up on the latter record — “Somebody Up There Likes Me,” “Can You Hear Me” and “Right” — as well as two tunes that were first released as bonus tracks on the 1990 reissue of Young Americans.
Meanwhile, Re:Call 2 features such rarities as the original single mix of “Rebel Rebel,” an Australian single edit of “Diamond Dogs,” and a single edit of the version of “Rock ‘n’ Roll with Me” that appeared on the David Live album.
Who Can I Be Now? (1974–1976) will be available as a 12-CD package, a 13-LP vinyl collection and in various digital formats. The CD and vinyl editions will come packaged with a hardback book offering rare and previously unseen photos, vintage reviews and notes from Visconti and Maslin.
