©Apple Corps Ltd.A new Beatles concert album featuring performances from the band’s three historic shows at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles in 1964 and ’65 will be released on CD, digitally and for streaming on September 9.
The Beatles: Live at the Hollywood Bowl is a companion to the upcoming Ron Howard-directed documentary The Beatles: Eight Days a Week — The Touring Years, which was fully sanctioned by the surviving Fab Four members and looks at the band’s career from 1962 to 1966.
Live at the Hollywood Bowl features 13 performances that appeared on the long-out-of-print 1977 album The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl, which was produced by George Martin, plus four previously unreleased tracks. All of the songs on the new record were remixed and mastered at Abbey Road Studios by Martin’s son, Giles, and Grammy-winning engineer Sam Okell, from the original three-track tapes of the shows.
The quality of the recordings featured on the 1977 album was not ideal, thanks in large part to the loud screams of the young fans at the height of Beatlemania. Giles Martin points out, however, that because of technological advances, the tracks now sound better than ever. “Now there’s improved clarity,” he says, “and so the immediacy and visceral excitement can be heard like never before.”
Live at the Hollywood Bowl comes packaged with a 24-page booklet featuring an essay by rock journalist David Fricke. A 180-gram vinyl version of the album also is due out, on November 18.
The Beatles: Eight Days a Week — The Touring Years will hit U.S. theaters on September 16, and will begin streaming the next day exclusively on Hulu.
