Credit: Jay BlakesbergThe 30th anniversary edition of Neil Young‘s Bridge School Benefit Concert takes place this Saturday and Sunday, October 22 and 23, at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California. As previously reported, the two-day event will feature performances by Young and his current backing group, Promise of the Real, as well as by ex-Pink Floyd singer/bassist Roger Waters, Metallica and E Street Band guitarist Nils Lofgren.
This year’s lineup also includes Willie Nelson, Norah Jones, Dave Matthews and modern-rock acts My Morning Jacket and Cage the Elephant. case/lang/veirs, a collaborative group featuring singer/songwriters Neko Case, kd lang and Laura Viers, also had been scheduled to take part in the shows but had to cancel because of logistical issues.
The Bridge School Benefit Concert is an all-acoustic event organized by Young and his ex-wife, Pegi. The event raises money for the Bridge School, a facility co-founded by Pegi that helps children with physical impairments and severe communication difficulties.
In a new interview with the Speakers in Code website, Pegi Young talks about the event’s usually unbending rule that all performers must play unplugged sets.
“Metallica, they come — I think this will be their third time playing — and play acoustic, and they get it, you know?” she notes. “And they still put on a powerhouse show, as have so many others like Green Day, The Who, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters — a lot of bands you just don’t see playing acoustic. It’s a beautiful thing.”
