Ed Perlstein/Redferns/Getty ImagesIt’s regarded by many Deadheads to be the greatest Grateful Dead concert on tape: A show recorded at Cornell University’s Barton Hall in May of 1977. In fact, it’s so famous that in 2012 it was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry, even though the show has never been officially released. Until now. On May 5, almost 40 years to the day since the show was played, the Grateful Dead’s legendary Cornell 1977 show finally will get a commercial release.
Barton Hall, Cornell University – Ithaca, NY (5/8/77) will be available as a three-CD set or a five-LP vinyl set. It also will be included in an 11-CD box set, May 1977: Get Shown the Light, featuring Barton Hall and three other shows from the Northeast that month. That box comes with a new book — Cornell ’77: The Music, the Myth and the Magnificence of the Grateful Dead’s Concert at Barton Hall (Cornell) — which also will be made available for separate purchase.
