Michael Tullberg/Getty ImagesOn Monday, family members and musical friends of Butch Trucks came together to salute the late Allman Brothers Band drummer at a private event held at the Cox Capitol Theatre in Macon, Georgia.
Relix.com reports that among the many notable artists who performed at the memorial were ex-Allman Brothers members Jaimoe, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge, Marc Quiñones, Jimmy Herring and Jack Pearson. Others performing included Butch’s son Vaylor, who played with his dad in The Freight Train Band; Butch’s nephew and Widespread Panic drummer Duane Trucks, and Bruce Katz, keyboardist with Butch’s recent group Les Brers.
At one point, Jaimoe, Quiñones and Burbridge were joined by Derek’s wife and Tedeschi Trucks Band mate Susan Tedeschi, Peter Levin of the Gregg Allman Band and Wet Willie singer Jimmy Hall for a rendition of blues great Albert King‘s “As the Years Go Passing By.”
Closing out the musical performances was The Yeti Trio, which features Vaylor Trucks. The group, joined by guest drummer Jaimoe, played a touching version of the Horace Silver jazz standard “Song for My Father.”
The memorial also featured a variety of tribute speeches delivered by Vaylor Trucks, Jaimoe, Haynes, Burbridge, Butch’s goddaughter Kendall Deflin, his widow, Melinda, his daughters Elise and Melody and his son Seth. The closing remarks were given by Trucks’ longtime ABB rhythmic foil Jaimoe.
Butch committed suicide on January 24. He was 69.
