1988 © Paul McCartney/Photo by Linda McCartneyPaul McCartney is treating fans to another preview of the forthcoming deluxe reissue of his 1989 studio album, Flowers in the Dirt, which included several collaborations with Elvis Costello. McCartney has posted a video on his official YouTube channel that features the original demo of “My Brave Face,” a song he co-wrote with Costello that reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The clip also features some rare footage of Paul and Elvis working and goofing around in the studio. The demo of “My Brave Face” is highlighted by McCartney and Costello’s loose harmonies and strummed acoustic guitars.
The raw track is one of nine “original demos” recorded by Paul and Elvis that appear as bonus tracks on the expanded editions of Flowers in the Dirt, due March 24. An additional set of “1988 demos” of the same nine tunes are included on the Flowers in the Dirt Deluxe Edition box set.
The box set also contains a DVD with various music videos, three new short films featuring archival footage and a making-of documentary. The collection comes packaged with a 32-page book containing McCartney’s handwritten notes and lyrics; a 64-page photo book; a catalog for the late Linda McCartney‘s 1989 Flowers in the Dirt photo exhibit; and a 112-page book focusing on the making of the album.
Recalling how he and Costello collaborated during the Flowers in the Dirt sessions, McCartney says, “[W]e sat opposite each other with our guitars because I had said to him early on that this is how I’d written with John [Lennon], with me being left handed and him being right handed, it was almost like looking in a mirror. We did virtually what John and I did which was just make up a song a day.”
