Mike Coppola/Getty ImageOn his show Wednesday night, Jimmy Kimmel welcomed John Mellencamp ahead of his being presented with ASCAP’s prestigious Founders Award at the 33rd annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards in Los Angeles Wednesday evening.

The singer-songwriter brought a special guest to Kimmel’s stage — his cute granddaughter.

Sitting and swaying in the chair next to Mellencamp — so much so that he eventually told her to sit with him in his seat — the little girl couldn’t name any of her granddad’s songs, but sang along with the audience on the chorus to “Jack & Diane,” which grandpa (or Old Man, as she calls him) sang to close out the show. Incidentally, Mellencamp admitted beforehand that the fan favorite was one of those he no longer likes playing in concert, but made an exception for the Kimmel appearance.

Mellencamp also reminisced about working and hanging out with Bob Dylan, who is a prior ASCAP Founders Award winner. “He’s the funniest guy I ever met,” Mellencamp said of the music legend. “He’s got a great sense of humor…He teases — that’s what he and I do: we smoke together and tease each other.”

Mellencamp’s Plain Spoken tour resumes October 11 in Worcester, Massachusetts.
