ABC/Lou RoccoMelissa Etheridge has got soul — and she’s showing it off on her next album. The singer tells Billboard that her soulful cover album, MEmphis Rock and Soul, will be released on October 7.
The collection features Melissa’s renditions of songs from the legendary Stax Records catalog, as well as some original tunes inspired by that classic sound. Her first release from the album is a cover of Sam & Dave‘s “Hold On, I’m Coming.”
“‘Hold On, I’m Coming’ is probably the first of these Stax songs I remember hearing when I was a kid,” Melissa tells Billboard. “That intro and chorus — ‘Hold on! I’m comin’!’ If that doesn’t make your heart and soul soar, as it did when I was a child, I don’t know what will.”
In addition to providing the first listen of the song, Billboard also released the album’s track list. MEmphis Rock and Soul is Melissa’s first album since 2014’s This Is M.E.
