Credit: Matthew BowieOne of the highlights of this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was Cheap Trick‘s reunion performance with original drummer Bun E. Carlos, who hadn’t played with the group since 2010. Unfortunately, Carlos tells ABC Radio that the event might be the last time he performs with his old band mates.
“Unless some promoter calls up and goes, ‘I gotta have the original band…Here’s a bucket of money. Please come and play drums,’…I really don’t see going out with Cheap Trick again,” says Carlos. “They’ve gone six years with [guitarist] Rick [Nielsen]’s kid [Zakk] on drums. They seem to be OK with that, so it’s really not my decision.”
Bun E. recently told Rolling Stone that his split from Cheap Trick came after a falling out with frontman Robin Zander, and he also revealed that he subsequently took the group to court when they stopped paying him the money he says he was owed as part of the terms of his exit from the band.
“I remain a member and an owner and all that, but we really don’t have much to do with each other at this point,” he points out.
Carlos tells ABC Radio that he got along well with his band mates at the Rock Hall ceremony, although he sensed they were still “ticked off” at him over the legal conflict.
As for the performance itself, Carlos says, “It was neat to get up and do a few songs with the guys.” He reveals that the band didn’t bother rehearsing “because we only played those songs about five- or 10-thousand times, so we just got up there and whacked that stuff out.”
As previously reported, Carlos recently released his debut solo album, collaborative covers project titled Greetings from Bunezuela!
