Boston Mayor Proclaims Friday “Pet Sounds Day” in Honor of Brian Wilson’s Symphonic Shows in the City

Capitol Records/UMeBrian Wilson brings his tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Beach BoysPet Sounds album to Boston for two special symphonic shows this weekend, and in honor of the events, the city’s mayor, Marty Walsh, has proclaimed today to be “Pet Sounds Day.” Wilson and his band will be accompanied by the Boston Pops Orchestra at the concerts, which will take place Friday and Saturday at Symphony Hall.

The shows will be the only symphonic performances during the North American leg of Wilson’s trek.

Mayor Walsh’s describes Pet Sounds as “an emotional autobiographical concept album credited with elevating rock music to new heights of artistry,” and maintains that it “revolutionized pop music with its unique approach to harmony and production, introducing innovative sounds such as bicycle bells, dog whistles, Coke cans, and the theremin.”

The declaration also notes that the album inspired “countless artists,” including Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, R.E.M. and Radiohead, adding that it “helped transform and further advance music across all genres.”

In addition, the proclamation lists some of Wilson’s many career honors, including being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and receiving the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award as a member of The Beach Boys.

Lastly, Mayor Walsh points out that the Boston shows are expected to be the final time that Wilson will perform Pet Sounds in its entirety with orchestral accompaniment.

Wilson’s Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour is mapped out through an October 15 concert in Sacramento, California.
