ABKCO FilmsIn 1971, Ringo Starr had a starring role in a cult Spaghetti Western movie called Blindman, which was directed by veteran Italian filmmaker Ferdinando Baldi. Now, a restored, high-def version of the flick will be released on DVD, Blu-ray and digitally on November 4.
The former Beatles drummer portrayed a lovesick Mexican bandit named Candy in the film, which was inspired by the popular Zatoichi series of Japanese flicks. Blindman tells the story of a blind gunman — played by Tony Anthony — who is tasked to escort 50 mail-order brides to their prospective husbands, a group of Texas miners. The film was co-produced by former Beatles and Rolling Stones manager Allen Klein.
Starr’s experience making the movie inspired him to write a song called “Blindman” that was released as the B-side of his 1972 solo single “Back Off Boogaloo.”
In advance of Blindman‘s home video release, the film will be given theatrical screenings this Friday and Saturday at midnight ET at the IFC Center in New York City. The movie also will be shown on October 21 at the Castro Theater in San Francisco as a double feature with director Alejandro Jodorowsky‘s famous cult flick’s El Topo.
