Columbia RecordsOn the heels of unveiling full details about his upcoming studio effort, Is This the Life We Really Want?, Roger Waters has released the album’s first single, “Smell the Roses.” You can check out the track at Waters’ VEVO YouTube channel, and purchase it as a download at iTunes.

“Smell the Roses” finds the former Pink Floyd singer/bassist reflecting ominously on the issues facing the global community, including war, pollution and political corruption.

“Wake up, wake up and smell the roses,” Waters sings on the sinister chorus. “Close your eyes and pray this wind don’t change/ There’s nothing but screams in the field of dreams/ Nothing but hope at the end of the rope/ Nothing but gold in the chimney smoke/ Come on, honey, it’s real money.”

Musically, the track seems to nod to all of Pink Floyd’s classic 1970s albums: The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall.  It includes a driving, funky bass, buzzing synthesizers, and a break featuring sound effects like a ticking clock, barking dogs, murmuring human voices and industrial noises.

Is This the Life We Really Want? will be released on June 2.
