Video of Jon Lord’s Farewell Concert with Deep Purple Getting Standalone DVD Release

1019

Eagle Rock EntertainmentA home video documenting founding Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord‘s final performance as a member of the band, will be released as a standalone DVD and digital download for the first time ever on August 26.

Live at the NEC, which was shot at a September 14, 2002, show in Birmingham, England, previously only wasavailable as part of Deep Purple’s 2008 Around the World Live box set. It features Lord joining the group’s current lineup — including his successor, Don Airey — for a career-spanning performance.

The concert finds the band playing such classic tunes as “Hush,” “Woman from Tokyo,” “Space Truckin’,” “Highway Star,” “Perfect Strangers” and, of course, “Smoke on the Water.” The show marked a symbolic passing of the torch from Lord to Airey with the latter musician handling keyboard duties by himself for the first part of the show, and Jon joining him onstage for the remainder of the gig.

The Live at the NEC video also includes bonus interviews with longtime Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover.  Lord died of lung cancer at the age of 71 in July 2012. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Deep Purple this past April.

Meanwhile, Bombay Calling and Total Abandon — two other Deep Purple concert videos that were first released as part of the Around the World Live collection and later were made available as standalone DVDs — now will be released as digital videos on August 26.
