ISO/Columbia RecordsTwo of the three final songs David Bowie recorded, “When I Met You” and “No Plan,” were given their world premiere on separate BBC Radio programs on Tuesday. The three tunes will appear on the cast album for Lazarus, the recent stage production Bowie co-wrote with Once playwright Enda Walsh, which will be released this Friday, October 21.
“When I Met You” is a dissonant and dark mid-tempo rocker that features Bowie accompanying his own lead vocals with some off-kilter harmonies. The song debuted on BBC Radio 6 Music on Tuesday morning, and you can check it out at the 51-minute mark of the show, which you can access at BBC.co.uk.
“No Plan” is a mournful ballad crooned by Bowie, and featuring reverb-drenched synths, jazzy saxophone and some shimmering guitar. The song premiered on BBC Radio 2 and can be heard at the 46-minute mark of a stream that also has been posted at BBC.co.uk.
Bowie recorded the new tracks — “When I Met You,” “No Plan” and “Killing a Little Time” — with the same musicians who backed him on his final studio album, Blackstar, which was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016, two days before he passed away. The Lazarus cast also recorded versions of those songs recorded for the upcoming album, as well as renditions of various famous Bowie tunes, including “The Man Who Sold the World,” “Changes,” “Life on Mars,” “All the Young Dudes” and “Heroes.”
The Lazarus musical opened in New York City last year, and will begin a run at the King Cross Theatre in London on November 8.
