Eric Ryan AndersonSting is definitely an iconic musician, which is why he’s going to be named BMI Icon at this year’s BMI London Awards, scheduled for October 10 in the U.K. capital.

BMI, a performing rights organization, will be handing out awards for the year’s most-performed songs on U.S. radio and TV at the event.  Sting’s award is the most prestigious of the night.

BMI’s executive director said in a statement, “Sting is an icon in the truest sense of the word. His musical catalog has had an enormous impact on music lovers from around the globe across multiple generations.” The former Police-man is also being celebrated for his work as “an actor, author activist and a humanitarian.”

Sting’s new album, 57th and 9th, is due November 11.  It’s his first collection of original pop/rock material in 13 years.
