Andrew Lipovsky/NBCJimmy Fallon welcomed Sting to The Tonight Show Wednesday, where they discussed his first rock album in 13 years, 57th & 9th, coming out November 11. Fallon also put Sting’s vocal chops to use in a comedy bit called “First Textual Experience.”
The segment usually features Jimmy and one of his guests reading embarrassing first text exchanges between guys and girls in a romantic setting, but with Sting in the house, Fallon thought they try singing them instead.
Earlier, the 64-year-old rocker explained the title of his new collection, 57th & 9th, which is a nod to an intersection the New York City resident passed every day while walking to the recording studio.
“I live on the Upper West Side and the studios I use are in Hell’s Kitchen,” he explained. “And every day I’d stop at this intersection, because the traffic’s busy. So, it was a little way of reminding myself that I live in New York and I love the city.”
Sting, who continues to draw huge audiences, recalled playing a show in Poughkeepsie, New York during the early days of his former band, The Police, in which they played for just three people. That didn’t seem to make any difference to him and his partners Andy Summers and Stuart Copeland.
“They were in different parts of the theater…I said, ‘Guys, just come down to the front.’ and I introduced them to each other and the band, and we did our show and got five encores.”
Sting and his band closed the show with a performance of “I Can’t Stop Thinking About You,” from the new album.
