Squeeze’s Glenn Tilbrook says band will be playing “an incredible amount of songs” during US tour

1123

Squeeze kicks off a new U.S. tour leg tonight in Pawling, New York. The trek is called The Squeeze Songbook 2019 tour, and as its title suggests, the ’80s new wave icons will be digging deep into their catalog of compositions penned by co-frontmen Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford.

Tilbrook tells ABC Radio that alongside their signature songs like “Another Nail in My Heart,” “Tempted,” “Black Coffee in Bed” and “Hourglass,” Squeeze will also treat fans to some rarities on the road.

“Chris and I made up a list of songs and then got together and actually we picked an incredible amount of songs,” Glenn reports. “And we went through all of them and, actually, almost every single one made the cut. So there’s a lot of songs that we either haven’t done before or haven’t done since they came out, and it’s really exciting.”

Tilbrook says that after Squeeze re-formed in 2007, the band made a point to pay “proper attention” to how their songs sounded on the albums in order to present them live at a high level, something they were inspired to do by observing The Beach BoysBrian Wilson and his solo group.

Opening for Squeeze on select dates the tour will be They Might Be Giants, ’80s punk pioneers X, and singer/songwriters KT Tunstall and Marshall Crenshaw.

“We absolutely love all of them,” Tilbrook says, but he undoubtedly has a special affection for Squeeze’s support act at the tour’s first two shows — his son, Leon.

“He’s very different to what we do, and I respect him for that,” Glenn explains. And…I love his enthusiasm…and people like him.”
