The movie, which was co-directed by late Dead singer/guitarist Jerry Garcia, features footage from a five-night stand that the band played at San Francisco’s famous Winterland venue in October 1974.

The “Grateful Dead Movie 40th Anniversary” screenings will be held at more than 500 theaters across the U.S. The event also will offer an exclusive preview of Long Strange Trip, the forthcoming Grateful Dead documentary that Martin Scorsese is executive producing, as well as a previously unreleased mini-documentary focusing on the legendary jam band’s celebrated May 8, 1977, concert at Cornell University.

The Grateful Dead Movie includes performances of such classic songs as “Truckin’,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Playing in the Band” and “Casey Jones,” and also features a series of animated interludes and footage of audience members reacting to the show.

“Grateful Dead fans across the country share a special connection with each other and with their favorite band,” says John Rubey, CEO of Fathom Events, which is presenting the screenings in partnership with Rhino Entertainment. “Gathering these dedicated fans together to experience exciting content from their favorite artists is at the core of what we do, and this event is a great example of that.”
