Soundtrack to new Grateful Dead doc “Long Strange Trip” due out next month

1142

RhinoCoinciding with the May 26 theatrical premiere of the Martin Scorsese-produced Grateful Dead documentary Long Strange Trip in New York and Los Angeles, an official soundtrack album will be released the same day.

Long Strange Trip Motion Picture Soundtrack is a career-spanning collection featuring select studio tracks and live recordings, including several previously unreleased concert performances.

Two physical versions of the album will be released on May 26: a standard two-CD set and a three-CD edition that will be available exclusively via Amazon. Both versions also will be available as digital downloads and for streaming.

In addition, a two-LP vinyl set featuring most of the songs appearing on the double-CD collection — plus a six-LP version containing all of the three-CD edition’s tracks — will be issued at a later date.

The soundtrack includes studio recordings of well-known Grateful Dead songs such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Ripple” and “Touch of Grey,” the version of “St. Stephen” that appears on 1969’s Live/Dead album and a previously unreleased live medley of Traffic‘s “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and The Beatles‘ “Hey Jude” recorded in 1989 in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

The exclusive Amazon version of the soundtrack includes previously unreleased live renditions of “Stella Blue” and “Days Between,” respectively, from a 1981 concert in Oklahoma City and a 1994 show in New York.

The soundtrack was co-produced by Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux and Long Strange Trip director Amir Bar-Lev.

“This is music from the time before selfies, when things were more fun and commercial free,” says Bar-Lev. “It’s just right for these troubled times.”

After its theatrical premiere, Long Strange Trip will stream on Amazon Prime Video starting June 2.
