Smashing Pumpkins’ original lineup release first new music in 18 years

Olivia BeeSiamese Dreams do come true, if you’re a Smashing Pumpkins fan. The original lineup of the band — or three-quarters of it, anyway — today released its first new music in 18 years.

As previously teased by singer Billy Corgan, the name of the track is “Solara.” It’s got the Pumpkins’ unmistakable sound, supported by distorted guitars and a meaty, pounding drum beat. Billy Corgan‘s voice is a notch more melodic than vintage-era Pumpkins tunes, with way less vocal fry.

The Pumpkins’ original lineup is intact except for bassist D’arcy Wretzky, who has had numerous public differences with Billy Corgan over the last year or so. Bass player Jack Bates will take over D’Arcy’s parts at Pumpkins shows. The live lineup will include a third guitarist, which the band says will allow them “to better emulate the signature tones and textures” of their albums.

“Solara” is available for download at the usual outlets and can be streamed on YouTube.  The Pumpkins will play their new song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon next Tuesday, June 12. Their tour kicks off in Glendale, AZ on July 12.
