ABC/Richard CartwrightWho frontman Roger Daltrey recently released an autobiography titled Thanks a Lot Mr. Kibblewhite: My Story in which the legendary singer candidly delves into many aspects of his life and musical career. In a new feature in the upcoming issue of AARP The Magazine, Daltrey touches on several interesting topics related to subjects and incidents he discusses in the book.

The 74-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Famer reveals that his favorite Who song is “Behind Blue Eyes.” He recalls that on the day he recorded his vocals for the tune, “my dog got run over, the first dog I ever had. I was desperately trying to hold it together.”

Regarding his professional relationship with Who guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend, Daltrey notes, “He’s a totally different animal than I am. He’s earth; I’m water. Between the two of us, we make things grow.”

Roger also shares his recollections about his experience performing with The Who at the historic 1969 Woodstock festival.

“The stars of Woodstock were the audience,” he says. “Backstage it was a zoo. We were there almost 10 hours before we hit the stage, and then we were exhausted. It was five in the morning or some ungodly hour.”

As for what he’s doing now musically, Daltrey reports, “I work all the time. Singers have to sing, especially at this age.”

That being said, Roger points out that the biggest problem he’s facing is that he’s losing his hearing, which he maintains is “the manifestation of being in the loudest rock band in the world.”
