Rod Stewart says his 16-year-old self would never believe he’d still be rockin’ at 73

RankinDespite having lived the life of a rock star to its fullest, Rod Stewart is still going strong at age 73. In a kind of reverse “Forever Young,” the man they once called “Rod the Mod” considers his formative years in a feature for the U.K. publication The Big Issue called “Letter To My Younger Self.”

Stewart says his teen self wouldn’t doubt for a minute that he’d end eventually up a rock star. He jokes, “With a nose and haircut like that, there was nothing [I] could have been but a rock star. I always say that to Ronnie Wood. What else could we have been?”

That’s also true for the attention Rod got back in his partying days: He says he was “born to be a show-off.” He says teen Rod wouldn’t have even minded being “splashed all over the tabloids,” as the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has been over the years.

“He’d love the thought of all that attention,” Rod says of his younger self.

So what would have shocked young Rod? Older Rod.

“He would be totally surprised that I’m absolutely still enjoying it as much now as I did back then,” says Stewart. “And I mean that…I really love it.”
