Karwai Tang/WireImageOne of the reasons that Sir Rod Stewart was knighted is because of his philanthropy, and on Monday night, he proved that he truly is a charitable guy.
Rod was onstage Monday night in London during the Pride of Britain Awards, helping to honor a woman named Katie Walker. Walker, 32, is a survivor of domestic abuse, and she used a grant from the Prince’s Trust charity to open a beauty salon in Liverpool, U.K. There, other victims of domestic abuse can come and get pampered, as well as talk about their experiences.
Honoring Walker with the Prince’s Trust Young Achiever award, Rod said, according to the Daily Mail, “I am very proud to be British tonight, I tell you. Isn’t it wonderful? And in saying that, I would like to donate 10,000 pounds [about $13,000] to your business to keep it going and up and running.”
He then called out British billionaire Lord Alan Sugar, who stars in the U.K. version of The Apprentice, saying, “And I’m sure Lord Sugar would double that.”
Rod’s wife, Penny, joined him onstage to tell Walker, “You are a true inspiration, and your voice has echoed across to so many women that need to have that opportunity to express their troubles.”
The Pride of Britain Awards honor Brits who’ve “acted bravely or extraordinarily in challenging situations.”
