ABKCO FilmsA restored, expanded version of Sympathy for the Devil, a 1968 film by famed French director Jean-Luc Godard that offered a candid in-studio look at The Rolling Stones creating a new song, will be released on DVD, Blu-ray and digital video on October 5 in celebration of its 50th anniversary.
The movie, which was titled One Plus One in Europe, features footage of The Stones as they worked on their classic tune “Sympathy of the Devil,” interspersed with violent and unsettling theatrical scenes offering reflections on the social and political upheaval taking place in the world at the time.
The band’s members — Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman — were captured at London’s Olympic Sound Studios in June 1968, along with session keyboardist Nicky Hopkins, Marianne Faithful, Anita Pallenberg and actor James Fox.
The rereleased edition of Sympathy for the Devil will offer a variety of extras, including a director’s cut of One Plus One; a documentary titled Voices about the making of the movie; a 2018 documentary featuring interviews with cinematographer Tony Richmond and producer Mim Scala; a commentary track by Godard expert David Sterritt; and an essay by author and music-industry veteran Danny Goldberg.
In advance of the release of Sympathy for the Devil DVD, Blu-ray and digital video, the restored film will be screened on September 7 at the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles, and also will be shown daily from September 13 through September 19 the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
