ABC/Richard CartwrightThe Who‘s Roger Daltrey is among the major British music stars Simon Cowell has assembled for a “We Are the World”-inspired charity song to help the victims of last week’s Grenfell Tower fire in London, U.K. tabloid The Sun reports.
According to the newspaper, the America’s Got Talent judge gathered the artists to record a version of the 1970 Simon & Garfunkel classic “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Other stars taking part in the recording include One Direction‘s Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson, Robbie Williams, James Blunt, Lily Allen, Leona Lewis, Emeli Sandé, and Rita Ora, the latter of whom grew up in the neighborhood near Grenfell Tower.
A number of local residents, many of whom lost homes in the blaze, as well as some people close to the victims of the fire, also will be lending their voices to the project.
Cowell, who reportedly began recording on Saturday, is shooting for a Wednesday release, and he hopes to have locked down even more stars by then, telling the newspaper, “Until that last note has been finished, we will not be off the phone.”
According to The Mirror, Daltrey was seen arriving at a London studio on Monday morning to record his part for the single.
BBC News reports that 79 people are either confirmed dead or missing and presumed dead because of the fire, which is still under investigation.
