Pink Floyd issuing rare version of “Interstellar Overdrive” as vinyl Record Store Day single

Pink Floyd RecordsAs part of this year’s Record Store Day event on April 15, Pink Floyd will release a limited-edition vinyl single featuring a previously unheard 1966 studio version of the band’s instrumental “Interstellar Overdrive.”  The one-sided, 12-inch single will be pressed on 180-gram black vinyl and will play at 33 1/3 RPM.

The rendition of “Interstellar Overdrive” featured on the disc was recorded on November 31, 1966, by Pink Floyd’s original lineup — singer/guitarist Syd Barrett, bassist Roger Waters, keyboardist Rick Wright and drummer Nick Mason. The mono track runs nearly 15 minutes long — about five minutes longer than the version of “Interstellar Overdrive” that appears on the band’s 1967 debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

The single will come packaged with a fold-out poster and a postcard featuring a well-known photo of Pink Floyd taken while the group was recording its debut single, “Arnold Layne.” The single’s artwork features pics taken in January 1967 during one of the group’s performances at London’s UFO Club in London.

Pink Floyd’s “Interstellar Overdrive” vinyl single will be available at select independent record shops across the U.S. in conjunction with the Record Store Day promotion.

Meanwhile, this Friday, March 24, will see the release of six separate individual volumes of Pink Floyd recordings that first were issued in November as part of the massive box set The Early Years — 1967-1972. Visit PinkFloyd.com for more details.
