It happened Thursday night in Pioneertown, California about an hour north of Indio. The latter, of course, is where the Desert Trip festival’s taking place, which McCartney played last weekend, and which he’s playing again this weekend.

The Desert Sun newspaper reports that patrons at Patty & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace were treated to a one-hour-and-15-minute set that included “A Hard Day’s Night,” “Junior’s Farm” and “Can’t Buy Me Love.” Sir Paul wrapped up the set with “Hey Jude,” which ended with a crowd sing-along that went on so long, McCartney quipped, “I can’t stop this thing!” He then delivered a three-song encore. There are a handful of uploads on YouTube if you want to check out some of the songs.

The gig was actually in the works for some two weeks, and was kept under wraps until Thursday morning, when local radio began spreading the news.  A lucky 300 people were able to attend, with more than 1,000 people turned away from the door, the Desert Sun reports.

The Rolling Stones and new Nobel laureate Bob Dylan return tonight to kick off the second weekend of Desert Trip. McCartney shares the Saturday bill with Neil Young, with The Who and Roger Waters scheduled for Sunday.
