MassLive.com reports McCartney and his band were joined during the event’s encore by Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir and by a local sports hero — the New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.
Weir, who had just played Fenway Park with his current group Dead & Company on Friday and Saturday, jammed with Sir Paul on versions of the Wings hit “Hi, Hi, Hi” and the hard-rocking Fab Four classic “Helter Skelter.” Prior to the latter tune, McCartney brought “the Gronk” out on stage as the crowd applauded loudly. The football star proceeded to play air guitar and dance wildly throughout the performance, and even approached the mic to bellow “Helter Skelter” as the song came to an end.
Sir Paul posted a brief high-def video clip of the “Helter Skelter” performance on his official YouTube channel.
According to Billboard, Sunday’s show marked the first time that McCartney and Weir ever played live together.
McCartney’s next show is scheduled for Tuesday at Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey, Pennsylvania. In honor of the rock legend’s visit, the Hersheypark amusement park has declared Tuesday to be “Paul McCartney Day” and is renaming a number of its rides after songs written by McCartney. For the day, The Great Bear will be called “Blackbird,” Storm Runner will be known as “Band on the Runner,” Bizzy Bees will be renamed “Let It Bizzy Be,” and Laff Trakk will be re-christend “Maybe I’m Amazed.”
