Courtesy of New York IslandersIt’s hard to believe it hasn’t happened before, but Billy Joel‘s hometown hockey team is staging a tribute to him this December.

The New York Islanders are hosting Billy Joel Night on December 15, as the team takes on the Detroit Red Wings at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. Joel was the first artist to perform at that venue when it reopened last year after massive renovations, and he’ll ring in 2019 there this December 31.

The Piano Man’s music will be played throughout the game on Billy Joel Night, and the first 10,000 fans will receive a bobblehead doll that shows Joel at the piano, dressed in an Islanders jersey and hat. In addition, fans will have the chance to win tickets to the New Year’s Eve show.

Billy’s New Year’s Eve performance will be his 34th overall at the venue. In 1998, he sold out nine shows there, setting a venue record for most sellouts in one year. A banner hangs in the rafters commemorating Joel’s accomplishment.

If you’re a huge enough Billy Joel fan — or Islanders fan — to make plans to attend the game, you can purchase tickets at NYCBLIVE.com or Ticketmaster.com.
